Therapeutic Sleep Test
Empowering your nights with restorative sleep therapy
What is a Therapeutic Sleep Test?
A therapeutic sleep study is a specialized overnight evaluation designed not just to monitor sleep, but to actively treat diagnosed sleep disorders—most commonly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Compared to a diagnostic sleep test, which identifies the presence of a disorder, the therapeutic study focuses on assessing how well a treatment—typically positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy—improves sleep quality and reduces symptoms.
What Happens During the Study
- Patients sleep in a controlled, comfortable environment while connected to monitoring equipment that tracks brain activity, breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels, and body movements.
- A CPAP or BiPAP machine is introduced during the night, delivering pressurized air through a mask to keep the airway open.
- Technicians adjust pressure settings in real time based on the patient’s response, aiming to eliminate apneas, snoring, and oxygen desaturation.

Purpose and Benefits
- Determines the optimal pressure settings for PAP therapy.
- Evaluates how well the treatment restores normal sleep architecture and improves oxygenation.
- Helps reduce daytime fatigue, cardiovascular risk, and other complications associated with untreated sleep apnea.
- May also be used to assess other therapies, such as oral appliances or positional devices, depending on the patient’s condition.
